his gorgeous pink matcha tea bowl with a spout is made by a talented Korean potter using a distinct Japanese style called Kurinuki. The term "kurinuki" comes from the Japanese words "kuri" (to carve) and "nuki" (to remove), referring to a technique where a block of clay is carved and hollowed out to create a vessel. This traditional method is deeply rooted in Japanese ceramics, particularly associated with the rustic aesthetic famously known as "Wabi Sabi". Wabi Sabi is recognized as the preferred aesthetic for traditional Japanese tea ceremony, formalized by Sen-no-Rikyu in the 15th century. Thus, this matcha chawan is not only beautiful, but it is deeply symbolic of Japanese pottery and tea culture values.

This matcha bowl has a wide base, allowing for lots of room to whisk vigorously. Signed by the artist.

Since it has a spout, this chawan is also a "Katakuchi", a pouring vessel. Katakuchi are useful in situations when you want to temporarily store/cool loose leaf tea that you brewed in a teapot (so that you don't over steep the leaves when you have more than you can drink at once).
